Following last year’s success, last week we held our second 48 hour hackathon. 20 teams with names like “Tastes like chicken”, “Here for beer!” and “BFG9000″ signed up. Consisting of over 90 colleagues, ranging from developers and data scientists, to designers and system engineers, it certainly was a mixed bunch. And they all took part in a crazy Red Bull fuelled development dash! Great atmosphere, awesome products, and some early signs of sleep deprivation were the result.
With 10kg of M&M’s, 200 cans of Red Bull, 4 bottles of whisky, and about 200l of beer it’s no surprise that we saw some real creative products. Some were just hilarious, like Kitten Tinder – seriously, why hasn’t anyone thought of this before? Others went out to explore how new tech could be used to make existing things more convenient or engaging, like a guided office tour app. Using beacons it points you in the right direction and shows information relevant to your location within the building. Pretty cool stuff!
Others took the time to work out existing business challenges, like improving personalised product recommendations or creating a new way for customer service to interact with customers on our website. Regardless of the seriousness, each product showed an amazing amount of effort by the teams. During the closing hackathon fair they demoed their results with pride, and rightly so.
All in all, we just had a lot of fun. There was close collaboration, great team spirit and awesome products. We really got to show what we’re all about and I’m already looking forward to next year. Want to see for yourself? Check out the video below!
